Peter was a slave on a sugar plantation in Dominica. The only words he uttered to his interrogators, Your time is done now, resonate powerfully today, less than 24 hours after Edward Colston’s statue was dragged off its plinth in Bristol and dropped into the harbour.
The history of his heroism is intertwined with the brutal, bloody history of sugar, cotton and slavery behind Quarry Bank Mill in Styal and my family there.
